Director

Prof Dr Carlo Menon

has a Laurea degree in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Space Sciences and Technologies from the University of Padua, Italy. Carlo was a visiting graduate student at external pageCarnegie Mellon University, USA and spent a few years in the external pageAdvanced Concepts Team at the external pageEuropean Space Agency (ESA), Netherlands before moving to Simon Fraser University, Canada, receiving tenure there in 2012 and setting up the Menrva research group. He is currently Full Professor and Director of the Biomedical and Mobile Health Technology research group at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. Carlo has been awarded a Tier I Canada Research Chair and has received career awards from both the external pageCanadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the external pageMichael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR). He has also published over 200 journal articles. Outside the lab, he likes exploring new corners of scenic Switzerland. Carlo has a strong interest in translating scientific discovery into impactful technologies.


Deputy Director

Dr Moe Elgendi

received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from external pageCharles Darwin University, Australia. Over the past decade, he worked as a research assistant, tutor, lecturer, research associate, and postdoctoral fellow at various universities, including external pageNanyang Technological University, external pageUniversity of Alberta, external pageUniversity of British Columbia, external pageUniversity of Manitoba, and external pageSimon Fraser University. Moe has 10+ years of experience in machine learning, algorithm development, data analysis, data visualization, evaluation, knowledge translation and received specialized training in big data analysis and leadership in education from the external pageMassachusetts Institute of Technology. Moe serves on the editorial board for external pageFrontiers in Signal Processing and as a guest editor for external pagePhysiological Measurement, external pageFrontiers in Digital Health and external pageFrontiers in Physiology. He has also been the recipient of over 10 competitive grants and published over 100 scientific works. Away from his research, Moe likes to immerse himself in local culture, exploring Switzerland’s splendid sights but also enjoying local soccer leagues.

Veronika Hall Abraham

is the lab’s administrative assistant, helping us build the group from the beginning. Veronika has a BA in History from external pageQueen’s University in Canada and spent a year at external pageHeidelberg University in Germany as part of the external pageOntario Baden-Württemberg student exchange program. She joins us after having worked at an engineering consultancy, a hedge fund, the private banking arm of a large financial institution and a start-up in communications. When not in the office, Veronika likes to swim in Lake Zurich, travel and does her best to keep her Scrabble score consistently above 375.  


Scientists and Postdocs

Dr Chakaveh Ahmadizadeh

is a post-doctoral researcher in rehabilitation and assistive technologies with a special interest in wearable systems, with our group since March 2021. In the recent past, she was specifically researching how to address the challenges posed by human machine interfaces based on force sensitive resistors for powered prostheses. Chakaveh has a BSc in computer engineering (2014) and a PhD in biomedical engineering (2020) from external pageSimon Fraser University, Canada, where she won the Undergraduate Open Scholarship, the Dean's Honour Roll, the Helmut and Hugo Eppich Family Graduate Scholarship, and the Faculty of Applied Sciences Graduate Fellowship. She has been working for Professor Menon since 2016. In her free time, Chakaveh is often hiking and camping in the forests of Switzerland, or on road trips and traveling throughout Europe.  

Dr Yinghong Wu

is a material scientist, with our group since September 2021. She is particularly interested in biomechanical energy harvesting and conversion, smart textiles, and wearable electronics. Yinghong received her PhDs in Chemical Technology from the Institute of Process Engineering, external pageChinese Academy of Sciences in the People's Republic of China and in Energy and Environment from external pageCity University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region), the People's Republic of China in 2020. She has completed previous postdoctoral research at the external pageUniversity of Hong Kong. Yinghong was awarded the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ University Dean’s Scholarship in 2020. In 2018, she was a visiting student at external pageHokkaido University in Japan. Outside her experiments, Yinghong enjoys learning languages, exploring interesting corners of Europe and watching classic movies.

Dr Alexander V Shokurov

is a physical chemist with a strong interest in surface- and interface phenomena, working for us as a postdoc since October 2021. His research interests lie in biomimetics, photophysics and electrochemistry of supramolecular and self-assembled molecular systems for the rational design of nanoscale functional materials. Alexander received his Nanomaterials Engineering degree from external pageMendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia in 2010, and defended his PhD thesis in physical chemistry at the Frumkin Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry, external pageRussian Academy of Sciences, in 2013. He has participated in studies in a wide set of disciplines ranging from fundamental physical chemistry and paleontology to chemosensors and molecular electronics, as well as having authored and co-authored more than 40 papers. In his free time, Alexander enjoys reading technical literature as well as works of fiction, while his vacations are usually spent doing ecotourism and whitewater rafting.


PhD Students

Brett Hannigan

is a doctoral researcher particularly interested in control theory, optimization, signal processing and applying these to wearable sensor systems for tracking human movement. external pageBrett has an MASc in Biomedical Engineering from the external pageUniversity of British Columbia and a BASc in Biomedical Engineering from external pageSimon Fraser University, both in Canada. Brett has worked for Carlo for two years and has previously worked at a medical device start-up company. He was a past recipient of a external pageMitacs Accelerate Fellowship to work with an industry partner as well as Faculty of Applied Science Graduate Fellowships. In his time away from the lab, Brett can be found alpine skiing, fly fishing, mountain biking, and working on anything mechanical.

Valeria Galli

is a doctoral researcher who joined our lab in October 2021. She has a BSc in biomedical engineering (2016) and an MSc in biomechanics and biomaterials (2019) from external pagePolitecnico di Milano in Italy. In the past, she has done research in the field of point of care diagnostics with microfluidic systems and computational fluid dynamics—in collaboration with another group at ETH Zurich. Before joining our group, Valeria worked as an EarlyStage Researcher in an EU-funded project in the field of computer modelling and simulation in cardiology. Her interest in wearable technologies for health span the range from motion tracking to monitoring bio-signals connected to emotions, aiming to create mobile health devices that fit into the user’s life seamlessly and are widely applicable. In her free time, Valeria also enjoys running and hiking, listening to classical music, or travelling around Switzerland and beyond.

Maria Papaefstathiou

is a doctoral researcher who joined our lab in September 2022. She is interested in the fabrication of intelligent, flexible textiles and their application in wearable electronics. Maria has an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from external pagethe Imperial College London and an MEng in Mechanical Engineering from the external pageUniversity of Cyprus. Before joining us, Maria worked as a Biomedical Device Officer for about a year at a medical device startup, and she comes to our group as a winner of the external pageSwiss Government Excellence Scholarship. Outside the lab, Maria likes to run, especially along forest trails, of which there are plenty to explore in Switzerland.
 

Shuaixin Qi

is a doctoral researcher with a keen interest in human factors and human-machine interaction. Holding a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and an MSc in Robotics, both from ETH Zurich, Shuaixin has previously worked on the external pageVariLeg team, where he contributed to the development of an exoskeleton for paraplegic pilots for the Cybathlon. Before joining our group, he worked as a research assistant at ETH Zurich, focusing on occupational safety and ergonomics studies. His work on pedestrian safety was recognized by an award from the external pageGerman Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. His current project, funded by the German Social Accident Insurance (external pageDGUV), aims to improve visibility aids in mobile machinery to prevent accidents. Outside of work, Shuaixin is passionate about board games, swimming, scuba diving, and experimenting with diverse culinary techniques from around the world.  

Yuanlong Li

is interested in the fabrication of flexible sensors generally and in medical signal analysis, too. He holds a BSc in Measurement & Control Technology and Instrumentation from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications as well as an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from Tsinghua University, both in China. Before joining us, Yuanlong worked at external pageGE HealthCare in their Clinical Applications team. When he is outside the lab, Yuanlong enjoys hiking, going to the gym and listening to post-rock music.

Alexandre Luster

is a PhD student who joined our group in January 2024. He has a particular interest in using data-driven approaches to improve human health. Alex earned his MSc in Life Sciences Engineering & Data Science from external pageEPFL, and carried out his Master’s thesis at the external pageHarvard Medical School where he studied sleep using intracranial recordings as a recipient of the external pageBertarelli Fellowship. During his PhD, Alex will research wearable sensing technology for sleep monitoring. In collaboration with external pageZURZACH Care, he will use this technology to evaluate the efficacy of a novel sleep therapy targeting individuals with traumatic brain injury. He will be co-supervised by external pageProf. Dr. med. Peter S. Sándor, Medical Director of Neurology & Psyche at external pageZURZACH Care. Alex’s project is generously funded by the external pageCanton of Aargau. Outside of work, you might find Alex climbing up a rock, balancing over a slackline, running on a trail or playing some classical music on the piano.

Pranav Ambhorkar

is a doctoral researcher who joined the group in March 2024. In research, he is interested in studying altered human physiology through the lens of engineering. Specifically, he is interested in developing novel neuromodulation protocols for entraining and modifying sleep physiology. Before starting at ETH Zurich, Pranav was selected for the competitive young-graduate-trainee (YGT) program at the external pageEuropean Space Agency, where, as a part of the Advanced Concepts Team (Advanced Concepts Team of ESA), under the broad theme of future human spaceflight, he conducted research in topics including materials science and hibernation physiology. He completed his bachelor’s (BASc.) and master’s (MASc.) degrees in mechanical engineering at the external pageUniversity of British Columbia and wrote his master’s thesis on external page3D-biofabrication for tissue engineering . Pranav’s research is co-funded by the European Space Agency through its competitive discovery element (Open Space Innovation Platform) external pagegrant. Outside the lab, Pranav is quite fond of eastern philosophy, enjoys classical boxing and reading science fiction.

For his semester project he analyzed waste bales using computer vision and LLMs at the Robotic Systems Lab (RSL). Whether it's hiking or skiing, playing football, golf or tennis, Tim appreciates the outdoors and can be found out and about.

Prior to joining our research group, external pageJulian worked on "Advancing Spinal Fusion Surgery Predictions" at the Institute for Biomechanics at Balgrist Campus and "Quantifying dopamine with nanopipettes" at the Laboratory for Biosensors and Bioelectronics. Julian is a passionate climber, if he is not at the Campus, you will likely find him climbing some stone or plastic.

Before joining Master’s at ETH, Jiayi completed her BSc with honours at Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, Shantou, China. In her free time, Jiayi likes to swim both indoor and in Zurich lake and travel around.

Janik is completing a Master’s thesis project with us in Winter and Summer semesters 2023/2024. Prior to joining our research group, he worked on learning quasi-static mechanics simulations using graph neural networks in the Computational Mechanics Group led by Prof. Laura De Lorenzis. In his Bachelor’s thesis project, Janik focused on analysing wear in the diamond wire sawing process in the Institute of Machine Tools and Manufacturing (IWF). His free time is mainly determined by sports, whether at home skiing or at the university playing volleyball or visiting the gym.

Vivian is carrying out a Master’s thesis project with us in 2023. Prior to joining our research group, he worked on the uncertainty quantification of a micro‑multiphysics agent‑based model for osteoporosis treatment at Prof. Ralph Müller’s Institute for Biomechanics. He has also worked for leading medical technology companies Zimmer Biomet and Stryker, completing internships in the research and development of artificial joints. Vivian is also a fitness coach and likes to spend his free time playing external pagebeach volleyball.

Shuo Li

Optimal Facial Regions for Heart Rate Detection and Development of a Novel Remote Photoplethysmography Methodology

Shuo is completing a full-time research project with us as part of an MSc degree in Biomedical Engineering. Prior to joining our research group, he worked on image-specific neural architecture search for implicit neural representation in Prof. Luc Van Gool’s Computer Vision Lab (CVL). Shuo was born in Beijing, China. He got his BSc in Electrical Engineering from Tianjin University’s School of Precision Instrument and Opto-electronics Engineering (external pageSPIOEE) in Tianjin, China. Shuo is interested in various sports including archery, rock climbing, swimming and running. He’s also a big fan of metal music.

Karmen Markov

In 2023, Karmen is completing her Master's thesis with us. Prior to joining our group, she worked as a Product Lead at health tech start-up external pageCoNurse, where she managed product development and worked on a external pageproject focused on privacy-enhancing technologies and AI to predict the occurrence of medical errors. Before pursuing her Master's at ETH Zurich, she completed her BSc in Neuroscience at King's College London. Karmen enjoys going on boat trips during long summer evenings in her native Estonia, or travelling to locations where she can go surfing.

Marlon is carrying out a Bachelor’s thesis project with us in Spring semester 2024 as part of his BSc in electrical engineering. He is interested in PCB design, consumer electronics, and he likes to tinker around with electrical components in the shop. His hobbies include running and when not in the lab working on his project, Marlon likes to take pictures either on analog film or with a digital camera.

Dr Sunil Kumar Sailapu

is an interdisciplinary scientist working with our group since December 2021. His research explores autonomous and self-powered systems/devices, biomedical engineering, alternative computing, chemical- and biosensors. Sunil has a Bachelor’s of Engineering in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Andhra University, and a PhD in Nanotechnology from external pageIIT Guwahati. He worked in an ERC funded project aimed at developing self-powered devices for biomedical applications as a postdoc at the external pageInstitute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM, CSIC). As a recipient of the TECNIOspring PLUS and Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship, Sunil further expanded his research activities through collaborations with IMB-CNM, the external pageUniversity of Geneva and the startup FUELIUM for exploring self-powered ion sensors. Sunil holds patents for his inventions and aims to translate results from laboratory research to real-world use. Sunil also enjoys playing cricket, volleyball, badminton, chess, and skateboarding.

Dr Debkalpa (Deb) Goswami

Deb is now a faculty member and Director of Biomechanics at external pagethe Cleveland Clinic's Cardiovascular Innovation Research Center in Ohio, USA. He is broadly interested in fabrication and manufacturing strategies for medical devices and implants. Before joining our group in September 2022, Deb was a postdoctoral associate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (external pageMIT), USA, where he developed therapeutic technologies for obstructive sleep apnea and type 1 diabetes, and patient-specific models for degenerative cardiovascular diseases. He completed his PhD in May 2020 at external pagePurdue University, USA, where his interdisciplinary research spanned the areas of soft robotics, biomedical sensors, 3D printing, flexible electronics, metamaterials, and scalable nanofabrication. Deb received his Bachelor’s degree in June 2015 from Jadavpur University, India, and spent a year as a visiting researcher at the external pageUniversity of Bremen, Germany, where he worked on the optimization of semiconductor manufacturing systems. He has received several internationally competitive fellowships including the Marie Curie Individual Fellowship (2020), the Ross Fellowship (2015), and the Erasmus Mundus Fellowship (2013). Outside the lab, Deb takes pleasure in travelling the world, watching soccer matches and visiting art galleries.

Dr Tyler Cuthbert

is a synthetic chemist with expertise in inert atmosphere chemistry, polymer synthesis, and structure-property relationships, with our lab 2021-2023 and working for Professor Menon since 2018. He designs multi-functional polymers from the molecular level to introduce new functionality to bulk materials. His interests lie in developing and applying stimuli-responsive and autonomous molecular systems to textiles and composites for use in wearable devices. Tyler received his PhD in Chemistry from the external pageUniversity of Western Ontario, Canada in 2016 and has completed previous postdoctoral research at the external pageUniversity of Victoria, Canada and external pageSimon Fraser University, Canada. He was awarded a Canadian NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2019 and a Faculty of Science Graduate Student Teaching Award in 2016. In his time off, you can find Tyler ski touring in the Alps, rock climbing, mountain biking, or kiteboarding.

Xin Zhang

is completing a one-year project with us as a visiting PhD student funded by the China Scholarship Council (CSC). He joined our group in December 2022. Xin’s research interests focus on electrospinning, e-textiles, and wearable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) for energy harvesting and sensing. Xin received his Bachelor’s Degree of Engineering in Polymer Materials and Engineering from external pageDonghua University, China, in June 2018. He then started the postgraduate and doctoral program as a PhD candidate majoring in external pageMaterials Processing Engineering. Xin was named an “Outstanding Student Leader” in 2021 and received the Donghua University’s Graduate Student Innovation Fund in 2022. When not working in the lab, Xin is usually playing badminton, swimming or watching films and TV series. He also enjoys to travel and hopes to explore more European cities during his stay at ETH Zurich.

Tomasz Raczyński

is a PhD student at external pageWarsaw University of Technology, Poland. For his PhD thesis, he is developing a pressure matrix printed on a textile to help patients at risk for bedsores. Tomasz is completing a PhD project with us as the winner of a external pageMobility PW grant. He will be working on developing flexible insoles with pressure sensors to help people living with diabetes.

Tomasz holds an MSc in Mechatronics Engineering and a BSE in Engineering, both from Warsaw University of Technology, Poland. Prior to joining our research group, he worked on screen printed ECG electrodes in the external pageCEZAMAT laboratory and screen printed pH sensors at the Warsaw University of Technology. Tomasz has 7+ years of experience in printed electronics with a focus on screen printing on flexible materials in general and textiles specifically. Last year, as part of a team of students, he won an international external pageJames Dyson Award with his project “smart wound dressing”. Tomasz enjoys playing board games, reading fantasy literature, and brewing good coffee. He also takes great pleasure in sailing.

Carola is interested in the interface between humans and machines, especially in digital health. Her prior research work at RELab involved validating a novel robot-based approach to measure sensorimotor impairments of the upper extremities in individuals with chronic neurological disorders. She gained practical experience during an internship in the manufacturing engineering department at leading global medical technology company external pageBiotronik. During her free time, Carola loves sports, particularly kitesurfing.

Aojie is completing a Master’s thesis project with us in 2023 as part of her MSc in Data Science. She is interested in using machine learning to automate analytical processes and to derive actionable insights. Aojie was born in China but got her BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science from New York University (external pageNYU), USA. As a foodie, she enjoys traveling to different countries and exploring local street food. In her spare time, Aojie likes to go hiking and has been exploring all Switzerland has to offer. She is especially fascinated by the "external pagebisse" watering system in the Alps, which is an engineering marvel.

In 2023, Alice is completing a Master's thesis with us as an exchange student. In her time away from the lab, Alice enjoys swimming, running and power yoga—or eating gelato.

Pierre is completing a semester project with us in 2023 as a visiting student from Canada. He is a winner of the external pageMitacs Globalink Research Award. Prior to joining our research group, Pierre worked on stretchable epidermal electrodes for premature infants using conductive polymers at the external pageLaboratory of Organic Iontronics at Polytechnique Montréal where he is completing a Master’s degree. He is interested in wearable sensors and the applications of conductive polymers. In his free time, Pierre enjoys playing music, Arduino programming and beekeeping.

Vera is completing a Master’s thesis with us in 2023. Prior to joining our research group, she worked on active electrode design for a dry-electrode EEG measurement system at external pageIDUN Technologies AG in cooperation with Prof. Hua Wang’s Laboratory of Integrated Devices, Electronics And Systems (IDEAS) at ETH Zurich. In addition to biomedical engineering, Vera’s other passion is gymnastics both as an active athlete and as a coach. Vera will be performing in the external pageWorld Gymnaestrada 2023, a multicultural gymnastics festival, in Amsterdam later this year.

As a native of Bologna, she loves food. A new methodology to construct ECG signals via smartphone cameras

Giuseppe completed a Master’s thesis with us as an exchange student in 2022/2023. He is interested in researching wearable technology, human-machine interfaces (HMIs) and artificial intelligence (AI). At Politecnico di Torino, he founded external pageExMAH, a student team to create a 3D-printed forearm prosthesis using electromyography (EMG) technology, a method of recording electrical impulses that originate from muscles. Giuseppe is originally from Sicily in Italy: he enjoys the sea and the sun. During his free time, he can be found going out with his friends, playing soccer or watching soccer with his friends.

Detection of COVID-19 Through Cough Signals Using Machine Learning

Having first completed a Master’s semester project in our group, Syrine followed up in 2022/2023 by working on a Master's thesis project with us in collaboration with Prof Dr Kurt Wüthrich of the Department of Biology's Institute of Molecular Biology and Biophysics. Prior to joining our research group, she studied physics: mainly statistical and quantum physics, but she was fascinated by computational science and sees this research opportunity to make a tangible impact in health care. Coming from Tunisia, Syrine enjoys everything nautical, like sailing or windsurfing.

Raffael completed a Master's semester project with us in 2022, having previously worked on magnetically actuated soft robotic simulations of cilia cell-based mucus removal and hip implant design. His hobbies include tinkering with a satellite antenna or a scanning tunneling microscope. Additionally, Raffael is interested in insects and arachnids: his favorite animal is the zebra jumping spider.

Before coming to ETH Zurich, she finished her Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering in her homeland, Thailand. When not studying, she likes singing songs in Thai and English. She can also sing some Chinese and Spanish songs. She might be able to sing in German in the future. Lalida also enjoys running, traveling, sleeping, and playing badminton.

It wasn’t enough for Pierre to have a foot in France, Poland and Germany already, he wanted to add Switzerland to the list, too. As an exchange student, he completed a six-month master’s project in nanomaterials with us in 2021, including writing a thesis. Outside the lab, Pierre enjoys road cycling and bouldering.

Pierre is now studying for his PhD at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands (external pageTU Delft) on the topic of designing precision micro-mechanical metamaterials, supervised by external pageProfessor Just Herder in the external pageDepartment of Precision and Microsystems Engineering.

Building Effective Machine Learning Models for Ankle Joint Power Estimation during Walking using FMG Sensors and Robotic Hand Orthosis for Therapy and Assistance in Activities of Daily Living

For his Master’s in mechanical engineering with a focus on robotics, control and system theory, Oliver switched from analyzing music scores at Sony to analyzing ankle joint power in our research group in 2021. His semester project was in collaboration with Professor Dr Xianta Jiang at external pageMemorial University, Canada. Oliver decided to complete a second project in our group: a Master's thesis project for tenoexo in collaboration with doctoral candidate Jessica Gantenbein from the Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory (ReLab) in 2022. In his down time, Oliver is a music aficionado and vinyl collector who gets a kick out of hearing something he has never heard before.

Federico has since completed his Master’s degree at ETH Zurich.

Born in Locarno with Italian roots, Igor enjoys soccer and skiing. When he is not working, Igor likes to play chess, go for a run or cook something new.

Saksham completed a Bachelor’s project with us in 2022 as part of an external pageIAESTE internship. Prior to joining our research group, he worked on deep learning based decision-making models for autonomous vehicles in VIT’s external pageAutomotive Research Centre. His hobbies include building competitive drones and RC Aircrafts with his university external pageteam. When not in the lab, Saksham loves exploring local culture and monuments through the lens of his drone.

Exploring Automatic Diagnosis of COVID-19 using Audio Signals

José is a Physics Bachelor’s student with a strong interest in experimental and medical physics, who completed a Bachelor’s semester project with us in 2022. Prior to his time at ETH Zurich, he completed a Bachelor’s in Musical Composition and a Master’s in Music Theory. He keeps the musical flame alive by conducting a youth orchestra in Bern. When he’s not solving physics problems, José likes to cook, especially to cook Spanish food, to travel and to play any kind of strategy game.

Optimal Signal Quality Assessment of Biosignals

Linus wrote a Bachelor’s thesis with us in 2021. Prior to joining our research group, he worked on external pagethe Bionic Flying Wing project in the Laboratory of Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures (CMAS lab). When he is not sitting at his desk, Linus is probably kitesurfing or training for a triathlon.

Linus in now doing an MSc in Robotics, Systems and Control at ETH Zurich. He is currently based in Prof Marco Hutter's Robotic Systems Lab.
